Wounded teen returns home months after shooting

CUMBERLAND COUNTY (WTVD) -- A Cape Fear High School freshman is finally home after two months in the hospital.

Catilyn Abercrombie has been in the hospital since she was shot in the neck with a .22 caliber bullet while eating her lunch on the school's campus off Clinton Road back in October.

Cumberland County authorities have said there was no reason to believe Abercrombie was the intended target.

Since then, the 15-year-old has undergone several surgeons to repair her esophagus.

The Fayetteville Observer reported Wednesday that Abercrombie visited Cape Fear High School Tuesday - the same day she was released from Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

The school's principal told the local newspaper that the teen wanted to talk to the school workers who helped her the day she was shot. Four of them were also honored by the Cumberland County school board.

Shortly after the shooting on Oct. 24, a .22 caliber rifle was recovered inside a school building and a shell casing was discovered in a breezeway. Investigators said footage from surveillance cameras showed two students carrying the rifle into the school.

Eighteen-year-old Ta'Von McLaurin, and 15-year-old Charles Underwood Jr. were later taken into custody at their Cumberland County homes later that day.

McLaurin has been charged with felony aiding and abetting. Underwood was charged in juvenile court with attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
