Crimes on NCSU campus have students concerned

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Several reports of crimes occurred Monday on the NC State campus.

Tuesday, ABC11 reported on one of those incidents that prompted a crime alert email to students. Now, students are wondering why they were never told about the other incidents.

The first incident on Monday happened as a university worker was headed to work about 5:30 a.m. She said a man followed her out of a tunnel and grabbed her by the shoulders. She pulled away and screamed and then headed for an emergency phone.

Campus police arrived at the call box quickly, located the suspect, and charged him with the assault.

The second incident happened at the Lee Dorm parking lot about five hours later. Police say a driver involved in a road rage incident with a student followed the student here, punched him and fled.

Then at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Raleigh police were called when a co-ed reported a homeless man tried to grab the handle on her car door as she turned onto Hillsborough Street.

NC State's police chief says the only crime that merited an email crime alert was the strong-arm robbery of student at the Wood Hall at 5 p.m. on Monday.

"We consider the type of offense, the threat to campus, whether or not there's information in a case that the individual is on campus or headed towards campus," said NCSU Public Safety Chief Jack Moorman. "There's a number of factors that come into play and only one of those incidents on Monday actually crossed the threshold of where we would do an emergency notification."

The victim in the incident near Wood Hall said the men forcefully took a book bag and other personal items and then took off down Western Boulevard towards downtown Raleigh.

The student immediately went to an emergency call box and contacted police, but the robbers had already made their escape.

One robber had on a red ball cap, white T-shirt, khaki shorts, and had a tattoo on the ride side of his neck. The other had on a dark-colored (possibly green) striped polo shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call (919) 515-3000.
