911 call shows child's emotional pleas after parents gunned down

RAEFORD, N.C. (WTVD) -- A 911 call released Wednesday reveals the heartbreaking moments after a child's mother and father were gunned down in Hoke County late last month.

Tommy Brown and his fiancée Thalia Mook died outside their home at 110 T.C. Jones Road in the Rockfish community March 24.

The home where the shooting happened remains vacant and neighbors are still haunted by what they heard and saw.

"When I heard the second shot, I heard the children running saying 'He shot him. He shot him,'" said neighbor James Howard. "I could hear her going 'Help me. Help me'".

An emotional 911 call echoes the horror of that moment. A caller can be heard saying, "Mom, I love you. Oh my God."

Emergency dispatcher asked where the caller's mother was struck by the bullet. The caller said, "My mom was hit in the leg. Please hurry up."

The dispatcher asked where the child's father was hit. The caller said, "I don't know. He's down. Please hurry up."

Detectives continue to look into the cause of the shooting. A neighbor, 48-eight-year-old John Oliver Hill Jr., is charged in the killings.

Witnesses told ABC11 that Hill had been shooting outside his home on Philippi Church Road - around the corner from Brown's house - and Brown had gone over to ask him to stop while children were playing outside.

Around 7:30 p.m., Hill allegedly walked over to Brown's home with a .30-30 hunting rifle and shot him. The three boys playing basketball with their father who witnessed the shooting ran inside to get their mother and when she came out, Hill allegedly shot her twice.

Peterkin said when his officers arrived, Hill had returned to his home on Philippi Church Road and a short standoff ensued. Hill surrendered after about 30 minutes.

Ten weapons were seized at Hill's home.

Hill was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He was being held without bond in the Hoke County Jail.

The Fayetteville Observer reported last week that Hill was diagnosed in the mid 1990s with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder according to his family.

Relatives of the dead couple have asked how a man with mental issues was allowed to have guns.
