About a thousand turned out in downtown Raleigh Tuesday for a rally in support of a program that would help children of low-income families get private educations.

Parents for Educational Freedom say the proposal would give corporations tax breaks if they give money to non-profit organizations that use the money to fund private schools.

"What you see is an outcry of working-class families saying 'Hey, we desire more educational options than our traditional public school system,'" explained Darrell Allison with Parents for Educational Freedom.

Allison said traditional public schools are a good fit for some children, but not all.

The General Assembly would have to approve the plan.

Critics say they worry about the net effect on public schools.
