SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- Prosecutors laid out their case against a Johnston County high school teacher at a probable cause hearing Thursday.
James McNamara, 25, is charged with one felony count of indecent liberties with a student. The alleged victim is a 16-year-old student at Corinth Holders High School where McNamara worked.
The teen was called to testify at Thursday's hearing. ABC11 is not identifying her because of her age and the nature of the accusations.
On the witness stand, the 16-year-old admitted she had a crush on McNamara and sent him inappropriate messages on Facebook.
She also said she lied to her teachers so she could see him at school. But the teen testified she was not lying about a ride home McNamara allegedly gave her. She said she'd been drinking when he allegedly kissed and touched her in her living room.
McNamara has pleaded not guilty to the charge. Judge Andy Corbett ruled Thursday that there was enough evidence for the case to proceed.
McNamara remains free on a $5,000 bond. He has been suspended from his job with Johnston County Schools.
There has been a huge support group behind McNamara since the accusation came to light. Many parents and students have showed up for his court appearances and signed a petition to have him reinstated.
