RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Nearly 300 women gathered in the Halifax Mall in Raleigh Wednesday to send a message to state legislators.
The women want politicians to know that they will be voting and that they matter.
The movement is called The Gathering: Women at the General Assembly, and many of the state's female Democratic leaders joined forces to shed light on key issues. Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarland, State Auditor Beth Wood, State Superintendent June Atkinson, and State Treasurer Janet Cowell were among the faces in the crowd at the gathering.
Governor Bev Perdue headlined the event and urged women to fight for key pieces of legislation.
"Remind those folks in these two buildings, that you're watching and taking notes," Perdue said. "Everybody's going to be held accountable for the decisions they make and the votes they make."
Organizers of the event told ABC11 they worry about key issues such as healthcare and education, and they want to be heard.
"We'll be going office to office and we'll also be going to the Senate and House chambers this afternoon," organizer Kaye Webb said.
As they plan to spread their message of empowerment, the women have heavy support.
"You all are the leadership of North Carolina's women African American population. You all are the stars, and we are counting on you," Perdue said.
