Ricin scare led to evacuations at Fort Bragg

FORT BRAGG (WTVD) -- A ricin scare at Fort Bragg put military and Fayetteville haz-mat crews on high alert after reports emerged of someone having the poisonous substance on post.

Post spokesman Tom McCollum told ABC11 that an area of the Randolph Pointe apartment complex was cordoned off for a time Wednesday evening. People in three apartments had to be evacuated.

Officials said they received word around 5 p.m. that a non-commissioned officer had ricin, which is an extremely poisonous protein extracted from castor beans. However, nothing was found when haz-mat teams went into that soldier's apartment about 7 p.m.

Everyone who was evacuated was allowed back into their homes after 8 p.m.

Fort Bragg officials said they will have more details on the incident on Thursday.
