SPRING LAKE, N.C. (WTVD) -- A soldier from Spring Lake is among the six soldiers who died in an IED explosion in Afghanistan over the weekend.
Pfc. Trevor Adkins was killed when the vehicle he was riding in hit a roadside bomb in eastern Afghanistan.
The 21 year old and the other victims were assigned to the 978th Military Police Company, 93rd Military Police Battalion in Fort Bliss, Texas.
His body was returned to Dover Air Force base Thursday.
Carolyn Haines said his son Trevor died living his dream.
"He always wanted to be a soldier," said Carolyn Haines. "From the time he could walk, he breathed it. His whole life [he] wanted to be a soldier."
The 21-year-old Overhills High School graduate was an MP. He had been in Afghanistan since February.
The flag in his family's front yard now flies at half staff.
"I told him when he went overseas I would fly the flag in his honor and it wold not come down untill he came home," said Adkins' stepfather Hartzell Haines. "I'm very proud of him and that flag shows him how proud I am of him."
Family members said it was in Adkins' blood to be a soldier.
"People called him a hero," said Hartzell. "He said, 'Dad, I'm no hero. I was just doing my job. It was my job. I was doing it so other people can live free.'"
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The others killed were:
- Staff Sgt. Ricardo Seija, 31, of Tampa, Fla.
- Spc. Erica P. Alecksen, 21, of Eatonton, Ga.
- Spc. Clarence Williams III, 23, of Brooksville, Fla.
- Pfc. Alejandro J. Pardo, 21, of Porterville, Calif.
- Pfc. Cameron J. Stambaugh, 20, of Spring Grove, Pa.
