Child shot, parents dead in Hertford Co.

HERTFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A five-year-old girl is in the hospital after her parents were killed in an apparent murder-suicide Friday.

The sheriff said 40-year-old Catherine McCutcheon was planning to leave her husband and take their daughter with her.

Authorities said 56-year-old James McCutcheon Jr.  then shot his wife in the chest and his daughter in the side, before turning the gun himself.

Both parents were pronounced dead at the scene.

There's no word on the child's condition.
