Local moviegoers see stricter security

APEX, N.C. (WTVD) -- After the recent shooting movie theater massacre in Colorado, an Apex movie theater is taking preventative measures to keep the same thing from happening there.

A sign in the window at the Regal Beaver Creek Stadium 12 says all bags are subject to a search before entering the theater.

One man who frequents the theater believes the rule is an overreaction and infringing upon his rights.

"It's a private facility and they have the right to do what they want to do, but I just don't think you should ask the public to give up their rights because of a crazy man in Colorado," Kevin Williams said. "Where does it stop?"

Williams said that he said the sign was not posted on Saturday, when the theater allegedly wanted to search his wife's bag. When the couple refused, their tickets were refunded.

The couple said what made the situation more upsetting is that they then went to Cary Crossroads Regal Movie Theater and no one asked to search their bag.

ABC11 reached out to Regal's corporate headquarters. They told us they take safety and security very seriously.

Regal said its security policy has not changed in the wake of the Colorado shooting, but moviegoers should expect stricter controls over the wearing of costumes to movies and enforcement of bag searches.

"The vast majority of our guests appreciate these safety measures," Regal said in a statement.
