RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Dan Ring took the witness stand in the trial of the man accused of killing his son Tuesday and told jurors about the day he learned his boy would not recover from a brutal beating.
In the interview, Travis Sherman admits he was involved, but says he didn't kill Kenny Ring. Instead, he pointed the finger at another man - who has since been cleared.
Ring died in January 2010 after prosecutors said he was hit in the head with a baseball bat during a store robbery. Investigators maintain it was an inside job pulled off by one of the store's drivers - Nico Bowers - and his best friend Sherman.
In the audio tape played for jurors Thursday, Sherman claims he never entered the store.
"The other person involved was Chris [Thomas]. I was the lookout. We knew the back door was never locked so he went in through there. He ran in the back door and I, I stood out there by the garbage cans," said Sherman.
He went on to say that Chris Thomas went in with a metal baseball bat.
"I heard a, I heard a yell then he comes barreling out the back door and we [redacted]. Nico comes and picks us up, drops us off. And he [Nico] goes back," he said.
Nico Bowers is also charged in the murder and is awaiting trial.
Chris Thomas was also initially charged with murder but that charge was later dropped after investigators said they came to believe Sherman was lying and that Sherman was the one who hit Ring with the bat.
Thomas is expected to testify at the trial. The alleged murder weapon was never recovered.
Previously in the trial, another driver who worked the night of the robbery testified he saw Sherman and Bowers together in Bowers' car - which was unusual because Domino's policy forbids passengers in delivery vehicles.
Sherman's former girlfriend also testified, saying he asked her to tell police they were together on the night of the killing, but she said they had broken up long before and were not together.
Sherman's attorney says he's innocent and claims Knightdale police botched the investigation.
