ORIENTAL, N.C. (WTVD) -- Deputies removed about two dozen dogs from what they termed a small puppy mill in Pamlico County Wednesday.
Investigators said some of the animals were in need of nutrition and medical care.
The Humane Society said it's the 11th raid on a suspected puppy mill in the state in the last 18 months.
It's calling for tougher regulations.
"We're working across the state on puppy mill issues. This is a Raleigh problem. We need policies passed in order to help these animals, provide minimum standards, so we don't find animals looking like this," said Kim Alboum with the Humane Society.
Officials said the homeowner who had the dogs in Pamlico has agreed to surrender them. Many will be brought back to the Triangle, treated, and then adopted out beginning next week.
