Suspect in triple murder allegedly plotted to kill sheriff

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Willie Whitehead, one of the suspects in the triple murder of three men at a Farmville convenience store, is now also charged in a plot to kidnap and kill Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks, his wife and a child of one of the prosecuting assistance district attorneys in order to gain his freedom from jail.

Whitehead, 24, has been charged with two counts of solicitation to commit first degree murder, and two counts of solicitation to commit first degree kidnapping.

Whitehead allegedly communicated his plans to other inmates and individuals that he was able to interact with outside the facility.  One of these individuals cooperated with investigators.

Whitehead's bond has been set at $5 million on these four charges.

The investigation into this case is continuing. 

Four people are charged with first degree murder in the April murders at the family owned convenience store that left three people dead.

Four other people are charged with crimes after the shootings.
