Food drive aims to help hungry families

FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- It's once again time to help local families who are in need of food this holiday season.

ABC 11's 26th annual Heart of Carolina Food Drive is being held Wednesday. Members of the news team will be out all day taking your donations.

Times are lean at the Food Bank of Southeastern NC in Fayetteville. Some shelves are bare, but workers say the need for food this holiday is bigger than ever.

"We are up to 110,000 people that we are serving monthly through our member agency networks," said David Griffin with the food bank. "The face of hunger has changed. It's the people who live next door to you, family and friends. It can even be a family member."

From peanut butter to paper towels, one bag full of groceries can be a life saver for a struggling family this holiday.

Food pantry director Kaye Lewis knows. She sees more and more struggling families each week.

"We have a church pantry at our church, Christ Methodist, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-12 we help people that come in," said Lewis. And for the past two months we have fed 76 families and 266 people."
