March 18, 2013 (CHICAGO) -- Some light snow may continue to fall as temperatures drop- and stay low in the Chicago area.
Some snow will fall throughout the afternoon- mostly fine, light snow in Chicago. But the real concern is the drop in temperatures that's headed this way. "We have a major hit of cold coming our way," Butler said Monday. "We are going to get caught in that bitter cold arctic air." Temperatures will fall into the teens Monday night and only rise into the 20s on Wednesday, which is the first day of spring.
Snow, ice, sleet tie-up morning rush
A winter weather advisory expired at 11 a.m. for most of the Chicago area, however an advisory remains in effect closer to South Bend, Ind.
"Right now, we are still getting just a little lingering icy mix, this combination of everything from sleet to freezing rain. The freezing rain is the worst," ABC7's Tracy Butler said Monday at 11 a.m. "It is just a little rain, [but] then it freezes on impact."
A mix of ice, snow and sleet fell Monday morning, creating slick conditions on area roadways. In south suburban Matteson, a Pace van carrying people with disabilities to a work center slid on the road, ending up hitting a tree.
"My daughter called. She said it's really slippery. The guy turns the corner, we heard a smash. My daughter and my neighbor went to open the door and help them get out of the car," Rebecca Price said.
The Pace bus passengers were taken to the hospital as a precaution. None of the injuries is life-threatening, officials said.
In northwest Indiana, road crews were out throwing down salt to combat the freezing temperatures. IDOT closed the Calumet exit ramp on I-80/94 while crews worked to clear the ice.
Some snow and ice will continue in the north and northwest suburbs, according to Butler. Temperatures will also drop.
