Johnston County man found guilty of raping child

Thursday, March 28, 2013

A new law may send a convicted child rapist to jail for the rest of his life.

Michael Finch was convicted Thursday, and now the district attorney's office wants to lock him up for life under the new statute. They say it's one of the worst cases of abuse they've ever seen.

It took a jury less than an hour to convict Michael Finch of rape.

The D.A. said Finch ripped the victim's childhood away. Testimony was so graphic it moved many grown men in the jury to tears.

Finch, who is a 51-year-old grandfather, was convicted of nine counts of raping and videotaping a young relative for years, starting when the little girl was just 8 years old.

Finch's attorney offered no defense to the seven videotapes and 195 child porn images.

An expert said this sex abuse case is extreme.

"This particular case is more egregious, more severe, definitely more problematic than your typical child sexual abuse case," said Dr. Sharon Cooper, a developmental and forensic pediatrician. "One-third of her life, one whole third of her life was spent being sexually abused and pornographically photographed by the defendant."

Under a new statue, the district attorney asked the jury to lock up Finch for life.

The jury is now out deliberating his fate.
