Tuesday, May 14, 2013

A family escaped from their burning Durham home overnight after spotting a fire on their front porch.

The home's owner told ABC11 that her daughter was getting ready for work around 2 a.m. when she realized their Wendy Way home, off Milton Road, was on fire.

Isabella Fortier, her daughter, her daughter's friend and a 2-year-old were able to escape through the back door of the house. The family's two dogs also made it out safely.

"I heard her screaming 'Oh my God, the porch is on fire' and we went out to check and tried to get out the door ... flames shot up and the house filled with smoke," Fortier said. "Grabbed the baby and ran out the back door."

The blaze quickly spread as fire crews arrived. Heavy flames were seen shooting from the roof, as crews struggled to get the fire under control.

The home was severely damaged.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the blaze.

The home's owner, who said she has lived there for 24 years, said the house was broken into last Tuesday.

"We've had bad luck," Fortier said.

Authorities said they do not believe the incidents are connected, but are investigating all possibilities.
