New charges in alleged robber's crime spree

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A man accused of terrorizing parts of Wake County in eight separate home robberies around Raleigh and Wake County faces more charges.

Police in Wednesday tacked on two new charges for 28-year-old Walter Kevin Johnson - who's now looking at a total of 25 charges in the alleged robbery spree.

Many of the victims were held up at gunpoint as they returned to their homes. Some were forced to drive to ATMs to withdraw cash.

The new charges filed Wednesday are in connection with the fifth incident on Sept. 27.

Authorities said a 21-year-old woman was dog sitting at a home in the 4900 block of Wynneford Way around 9 p.m. when a man wearing a mask approached her in the driveway as she was returning to her car.

The woman told police that he forced her back into the home and told her to retrieve jewelry and money, but she explained that she didn't live at the home and did not know where those items were kept.

The suspect mentioned going to an ATM for cash, and the woman said she couldn't find her keys. That's when the suspect allegedly kicked the woman and turned away, according to authorities.

Authorities have now charged Johnson with assault on a female and assault by pointing a gun in connection with the Sept. 27 incident. They also said more charges could be possible.

Johnson was arrested last Friday during a police stop on Glenwood Avenue near Pleasant Valley Road after sources tell ABC11 his wife called 911.

In a recording of the call obtained by ABC11, a woman tells an operator she has information about "the man that has been doing the women robberies."

Asked if the person she's talking about is home, she replies: "He's supposed to be at work, but I don't know if he's there because, lately, he's been acting really weird and I don't know if he even has a job anymore."

The operator asks if she's sure the man is the robber.

"I suspect it," the woman responds. "There's evidence all over the house. I just can't find the damn gun."

Johnson remains in the Wake County jail under a $3.5 million bond.
