Some UNC students complain about lack of heat, plumbing problems on campus

Tuesday, January 08, 2013

Some students at UNC-Chapel Hill returned to classes Wednesday to find plumbing and heating problems.

This week's deep freeze created heating problems in some residence halls and caused at least one pipe to burst. However, one student told ABC11 that the problems have been happening since Thanksgiving break.

There were even reports of frozen toilets but UNC officials could not confirm that. They did confirm that at least a couple of the residence halls have experienced heating issues. They say five coils in the chilled water loop burst across campus.

At Taylor Hall, officials say a sprinkler pipe burst. However, they said it was not in a residence hall but an office/lab building in the hospital/medical complex.

They also say all heating systems have been repaired, but a student who has lived at the Taylor Hall residence hall on South Campus for the last two years says that isn't true.

"Our heating isn't working. It's been extremely cold. We've had them come in several times -- maintenance workers. They usually leave and they say they'll get back to us," said UNC senior Sierra Lloyd.

Wednesday was actually the first day of classes for the new semester and Lloyd says students really didn't have anywhere else to go. She said so they have resorted to bringing in their own heaters until the university fixes the problem.

The university maintains that the heating problems have been fixed.

In a statement to ABC11, Susan Hudson, of the UNC News Services said, "I can't comment on whether the heat in each individual's room or apartment is working, but the facilities staff does confirm that there are no building-wide heating failures. They also said that part of the problem could be that in buildings where the heat was turned down over break, it took some time for the temperatures to reach a comfortable level, especially with the outdoor temperatures being so low."
