RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- First Lady Michelle Obama's visit to the Triangle Wednesday is proof the the Obama campaign still intends to compete in North Carolina, despite Mitt Romney's lead among many North Carolina voters.
The Republican nominee leads President Obama by almost five points in the Real Clear Politics Poll, which averages four polls together taken recently within our state.
North Carolina GOP members insist the party has learned the lessons of 2008 when John McCain surprisingly lost North Carolina. This time around Republicans began setting up Romney campaign offices in May, their earliest start ever in a presidential cycle.
Compared to 2008 Romney volunteers made 20 times as many phone calls and knocked on 180 times as many doors.
State GOP leaders said the President's national convention in Charlotte fell with North Carolina voters.
"The Democratic message they put forward in Charlotte at the DNC was out of touch with North Carolina. As evidence, Mitt Romney is ahead in the polls and Barack Obama got no bounce coming out of the DNC in the home state. So clearly what they said didn't resonate in North Carolina," Rob Lockwood said.
Democrats say Republicans are playing catch up in North Carolina. While the Romney camp started setting up offices across the state in May, the Obama campaign started registering voters in the state back in 2010.
