Vick to start Friday, will split reps with Foles

Michael Vick will start for the Philadelphia Eagles in their preseason opener against New England on Friday night because coach Chip Kelly says it's his turn to go first in the quarterback rotation.

Nick Foles also will take snaps with the starters, and Kelly said the second-year pro will start the second preseason game. Both Vick and Foles are expected to get between 12 and 20 snaps versus the Patriots.

"I can't read into it," Vick said of the starting nod, according to The Philadelphia Daily News. "Coach, all he told us is that I'm going to start, but it won't be the same next week. So you've got to take it for what it's worth and keep moving."

Foles said, "we're cool with it," when asked about Kelly's decision.

"We're ready to go, we're ready to go after it," he said, according to The Daily News.

The two quarterbacks have been competing for the No. 1 job since Kelly's arrival in Philadelphia. Rookie Matt Barkley will come in after Vick and Foles.

Kelly made the announcement Thursday, saying it had nothing to do with evaluations or performance in training camp so far.

"It was Mike's day in the rotation, that was the easiest way for us to do it and then we'll make sure the rotation works out that Nick will get the start next week," Kelly said, according to the team's website. "The two of those guys, we feel like we've got it balanced out. We met with those guys this morning, they were great with it, so that's kind of our plan going in."

On Wednesday, he cautioned the media not to read too much into which quarterback started Friday.

"We do have to have someone start the game, but I wouldn't say that the guy who starts the game is going to be the starter overall or in general as we get going on Sept. 9 [versus the Washington Redskins on ESPN's "Monday Night Football"]," Kelly said.
