Embarq is closing a call center in North Carolina affecting about 180 workers.

The Sun Journal of New Bern reported the company will lay off about 100 workers when it closes its call center in November. Workers learned Thursday about the closing, which is the result of Embarq's recent merger with CenturyTel Inc.

Employees will be able to apply for jobs in the new company or relocate to available positions.

Workers who stay with Embarq until early November get a severance package.
