(03/10/06 - RALEIGH) (WTVD) -- We love the beautiful weather we've been experiencing, but we're starting to pay for it. Drought threatens much of our state.
Sixteen counties in the viewing area alone fall into the drought category sparking concern over fires and the need to conserve water.
For most of 2006, snow and ice has been notably absent and people like Kay Bullard aren't complaining. "It's been unusual but I think everybody has enjoyed it."
But the lack of rain or snow hasn't done much to help out the Triangle's lakes and reservoirs. While they're rebounding, the state's environmental department says most of central North Carolina remains in a moderate drought.
An added danger is the sun and wind drying out area forest, making wildfires easier to start.
Jamie Kritzer of the North Carolina Forestry Service explains. "People need to be very careful when they're burning debris out in the yard. They need to be careful, extra cautious. Carry a garden hose with you, have hand tools ready so you can put the fire out if you need to."
Despite this warning, Durham leaders say the Bull City will remain under Stage I Water Restriction level - - a voluntary effort.
Raleigh remains at Stage II Water Restrictions in which saving water is mandatory. Raleigh officials decided to keep the restriction in place because of the dry conditions.
State leaders plan to meet later this month to discuss the drought.
