Durham Police Investigate Suspicious Package

High drama in the streets of Durham Wednesday where police were forced to deal with a suspicious package near Duke's East Campus, and forced evacuations at a nursing home.

Officials were called to the 700-block of Broad Street around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Several businesses on Broad were evacuated between as officials closed down the road.

The package was removed by a bomb squad robot to be detonated at a remote location.

The incident lasted for two hours. Traffic and people were allow access to the area by 4 p.m.

In an unrelated incident, at 2:16pm, Durham Police Department responded to a bomb threat at Hillcrest Convalescence Center located at 1417 Pettigrew Street.

The center was evacuated and checked for anything suspicious. Residents transported to Duke Memorial Methodist Church during the investigation. They were allowed to return after the building was searched.

Police say they have no idea who left the package. They're asking anyone who may have ssen something to call Durham Crimestoppers.
