(02/16/07 -- RALEIGH) (WTVD) -- A trip to KFC leaves a Wake County man mad! He says he couldn't believe what he found in his sandwich.
Nathan Toothman says he ordered three snack size sandwiches from a Cary KFC, the first and second one no problems, but when he opened the third, he stopped eating. He said, "The light just happened to hit the wrapper just right, and I knew immediately what it was." Blood is what Toothman thinks was on his Kentucky Fried Chicken wrapper.
He took the wrapper back to the KFC and showed it to the manager. He says he was met with nothing but evasiveness and defensiveness. "They didn't want to hear it. I kept hearing it's not blood. There's no way that happened...it couldn't happen here."
Toothman says he called the general manager of this KFC and the health department. After the health department got involved, Nathan says the GM agreed to sit down with him. She asked Toothman what he wanted, and Toothman said, "I want 2 things. First of all, I want for you to take steps to ensure that this doesn't happen again because it's disgusting and it made me, you know, sick, and it is sick. And I said secondly, I would like for you to pay for me to get a blood test against all blood borne pathogens."
Toothman says the GM told him he'd hear from the insurance company. After weeks of getting nowhere he received this settlement offer of $200, but that didn't cover the $249 test.
Toothman e-mailed Troubleshooter Diane Wilson. After a call to KFC's corporate offices in Louisville, the insurance company called Toothman back and offered him enough money to cover the blood tests. He said, "I got what I wanted. It's just a terrible shame that I had to go through what I had to go through to get to the end goal."
A KFC representative said, "Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our customers. We are committed to providing the highest level of food safety in our restaurants and we have strict internal controls in place. As soon as this incident was reported, we took immediate action to investigate the customer's report."
Nathan took that money from the settlement and had his blood tested and everything checked okay.
