MySpace Threat Sends Officials to Vance High School
(05/28/07 -- VANCE COUNTY) (WTVD) -- Some scary moments at Southern Vance County High School Monday. Parents were sent scrambling when word of a gun in school started circulating.
Sheriff's deputies were called and a search quickly got underway.
On Memorial Day most schools were closed, but class was in session at Southern Vance High. According to the superintendent someone wasn't happy about it and took matters into their own hands. That student, according to school officials, posted word on MySpace.com that a gun was in school. Rakeem Lewis watched as work quickly spread.
"I knew it wasn't real. That nobody had a gun. But everybody was scared, running through the hall and stuff. Everybody left for no reason. I knew it wasn't for real," Lewis said.
As the day went on, cell phones started relaying the message. Word reached parents who started picking up their children. This as Sheriff's deputies searched for any sign of a weapon.
Vance County Superintendent, Normal Shearin said nothing was found. "Kids can come up with all kinds of things. I was one once too. I understand some of that and it wasn't malicious. I don't think that was the intent. I think the intent was to go home."
Parent, Rev. John Miles isn't convinced this was a prank. "The Sheriff hasn't found no gun in school. But what happened was the school did not get locked down. If the school was locked down you maybe could've found that gun. But the school didn't get locked down so you don't know if it was a gun there or not. Because people came in and out and got their child," Miles said.
Superintendent Shearin says he hopes to avoid holding a Memorial Day makeup next year but can't rule it out. While a lot of students when home, classes stayed in session for the remainder of the day for students like Rakeem. "We could have been somewhere at the beach chillin' somewhere, but we gotta be in school."
So far no arrests have been made, but investigators hope MySpace.com will turn over some information.
