Drought on the Doorstep for The Triangle

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

The good news is lake and reservoir levels in the Triangle are normal right now thanks to a wet winter. However, experts warn central North Carolina is teetering on the edge of drought conditions and water levels may soon become a problem, forcing much of central North Carolina into a drought .

The cause?

No widespread rain to help recharge water levels combined with the increased water usage and water evaporation typical of the summer months.

According to the National Weather Service, Raleigh is currently four inches below the rainfall totals this same time last year and Greensboro is experiencing the third driest May on record since the 1920s.

Forecasters are watching the lakes, streams and reservoirs closely, at the same time hoping for a widespread rainy forecast in the very near future. Otherwise, the severe drought conditions in the western portions of the state are likely to move east.

The newest drought forecast will be released on Thursday by the state Drought Monitor.
