Suspect Charged After Being Hit by Car
(07/10/07 -- RALEIGH) (WTVD) -- A street scuffle and a call for backup ended with a Raleigh police officer and another man being run over by a police car.
The bizarre incident happened just east of downtown.
Details from police of exactly what happened are still not available. Eyewitness News has pieced together most of what happened based on eyewitness accounts.
The only sign of what happened just minutes after it happened was a passenger side mirror busted off a police car and two men lying in the street surrounded by paramedics.
One of the men was wearing a handcuff, held gingerly by a police officer. Eyewitnesses say the police car ran into the two men.
"All of a sudden we heard this big bang," said Robin Versher, eyewitness.
Versher manages a restaurant around the corner from Camden Street and quickly ran to the scene.
"It was so loud it was unbelievable," he explained. "You just knew two cars had hit. And when we get around there and realize it was somebody's body go hit by a car, a police car, it was unbearable."
Versher said he saw two men under the car. "Two people laying on top of each other hollering and screaming. They both was hollering, you know."
He quickly figured out the man on top was a police officer. The man underneath was wearing a handcuff.
The man wearing the cuff was identified as Eddie Keith by a woman at the scene who said she was Keith's mother.
The woman said the police have had it in for her son because he's a drug addict. "The police just picks on him cause he is on crack bad," said Brenda Jones, Keith's mother. "But they always pick on him. He could be sitting up there on Heyward Street. They call him 'crack head.'"
But details of what happened are still under investigation and not being released by police. Eyewitnesses said they were quickly shooed away.
"They surrounded it so that it's like they wanted nothing or nobody to see nothing, you know," said Versher.
The certainly didn't want news crews to see. Photographers were moved a couple of times, eventually behind both crime scene tape and a chain link fence. But that apparently wasn't far enough away.
One officer even used his body to block the view.
Neither man suffered life threatening injuries. Keith's mother said she believes the police officer intentionally tried to hit her son.
Keith is charged with one count of strong-arm robbery and is being held at the Wake County Jail.
