Wind from hurricane reaches North Carolina coast

(11/02/07 -- OCRACOKE, N.C.) -- Wind gusts of nearly 50 miles an hour hit the Outer Banks today as Hurricane Noel moved off the coast.

Noel was 425 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras late this morning, moving northeast about 17 miles an hour.

Forecasters say Noel could grow in size but not intensity.

Meteorologist Casey Quell at the National Weather Service office in Newport says there are warnings for high winds and coastal flooding. But Quell says there will be no landfall.

Quell says buoys offshore recorded winds as high as 49 miles an hour. Little rain is expected.

John Miginsky at the Ride the Wind surf shop on Ocracoke Island says the waves were not as good as he expected.

Ferry service between Currituck and Knotts Island was temporarily suspended because of high winds and low water.
