Toledo Public Schools are notifying parents of a student with a case of H1N1 virus. The 14 year old female student attends classes at Byrnedale Middle School. The student was on a field trip to NYC last week. The test results were confirmed positive today at noon. She has been treated and is under the care of a doctor. Byrnedale Middle School will not be closing early. The last day for classes is June 4th.
UAW members across the country are casting their ballots today. They're voting on a new contract with General Motors. Local 14 union members began voting this morning at 7:30. The voting goes on until 9:00 tonight at the Local 14 hall on Jackman Road.
Toledo police are investigating the death of woman who was found in an alley. Police say April Nicole Johnson was found in an alley on the 200 block of Prescott. She was in critical condition and died yesterday. Her husband, Johnnie Johnson, has been charged with felonious assault and is in the Lucas County jail. Pending the results of the autopsy, his charges may be changed to include murder.
General Motors says a committee of bondholders has agreed to a sweetened deal to erase some of the automaker's debt in exchange for company stock. GM says it will offer bondholders 10 percent of the company's stock if they agree to support selling the company's assets to a new company. Meanwhile, a person familiar with discussions between GM and the government says any Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing would likely come Monday. That's the deadline for GM to finish its restructuring or enter court protection.
Chrysler's bankruptcy hearing resumed in New York today. The automaker wants a federal judge to okay its sale to Fiat, despite objections from some dealers, employees, and debtholders. Attorneys for Chrysler say a deal with Fiat is the company's only hope to avoid being sold off piece by piece. However, if the deal doesn't close by June 15th, Fiat could back out.
Ford's biggest parts supplier, Visteon, is filing for bankruptcy. In a court filing, the company lists $4.5 billion in assets but, $5.3 billion in debt. The company has more than 30,000 workers. The move puts pressure on Ford, the only automaker of the Big Three not to require assistance from Uncle Sam.
An industry report shows that a record 12 percent of homeowners with a mortgage are behind on their payments or in foreclosure. The Mortgage Bankers Association reports the foreclosure rate on prime fixed-rate loans doubled in the last year, and now represents the largest share of new foreclosures. Nearly 6 percent of fixed-rate mortgages to borrowers with good credit were in the foreclosure process.
More charges are possible against a Pennsylvania woman accused of a kidnapping hoax. Bonnie Sweeten called 911 yesterday saying she and her 9 year old daughter had been abducted and stuffed into the trunk of their car. But the same day, officials caught her on surveillance video using a co-worker's license to buy plane tickets to Florida. Both Sweeten and her daughter were found at a Disney World Resort. Sweeten's ex-husband told Good Morning America that Sweeten is good person and may of lost it. Sweeten's now charged with filing a false report and identity theft.
A car slammed into a California preschool today, reportedly pinning one child under the car. Five children were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. Authorities say a mother dropping off her child plowed into the Huntington Beach preschool. Fourteen children were inside at the time. No word on whether the driver is hurt or what caused the accident. The driver has not been charged.
Lawyers for Casey Anthony were in court today and a new member of her defense team was introduced. Andrea Lyon is a death penalty attorney and a law professor at De Paul University in Chicago. Anthony's attorneys are arguing about a video. It reportedly shows her reacting to the news that her daughter Caylee's remains had been found. Her lawyers argue the video should not be shown in court, saying it would invade her right to keep medical records private and attorney-client privilege. Casey Anthony has pleaded not guilty to killing her 2 year old daughter.
It was Oklahoma City's first triathlon, but prospects for a repeat performance could be dampened after reports that 20 of the participants may have gotten sick from swimming in the Oklahoma River. The river was tested six months before the race to make sure it was safe. Health officials say a number of things could have made the tri-athletes sick and they're investigating the cause. A 14 year old boy in Idaho is charged as an adult in the murder of his father. Police say Zachary Neagle killed his father, shooting him as he slept on the couch. They say he then called 911 and said, "My dad's been shot." Zachary's parents were divorced. His mother says she can't believe her son would commit such an act. But some family members have raised concerns about the possibility of sexual abuse. Police say there was a sex toy found in Zachary's room.
Now that the space shuttle Atlantis is back safely from its mission to repair the Hubble space telescope, NASA is preparing for the next mission, this time by Endeavour. Endeavour's liftoff is scheduled for June 13th from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA says Endeavour will travel to the International Space Station to deliver components for a Japanese laboratory complex. Atlantis returned from its 13 day mission in space on Sunday.
