Drug bust in Seneca County, search continues for Cindy Sumner, sheephead smashes through Ohio woman's car.
It looks like police have put a big dent in a heroin operation running between Columbus and Tiffin. Following a traffic stop, members of the Seneca County Drug Task Force METRICH Enforcement Unit found 90 balloons of suspected heroin, drug paraphernalia, and criminal tools in a car owned by Seth Hoover, 24. Hoover is charged with possession of heroin. Seth Carter, 22, was also charged in the case with driving under suspension and misdemeanor driving offenses.
The search for Cindy Sumner continues. She's been missing since Thursday. Her family doesn't believe she ran away. They think someone lured her into another side of town. Investigators say several units are working on this case including Human Trafficking. If you know anything about her disappearance, call 911 or detectives at 419-255-1111.
Authorities in Marblehead say a sheephead smashed the car windshield of an Ohio woman's car after an eagle dropped the catch from about 40 feet in the air. Leighann Niles says the impact felt like a brick hitting her car.
The National Association of Realtors says U.S. home prices posted a gain during the second quarter. During that time period, median sales price was $174,000, up 4 percent from the first quarter. However, prices were still down from a year ago in 129 out of 155 U.S. metro areas.One of the most recognizable faces in college basketball is now at the center of an extortion scheme. Louisville men's basketball coach Rick Pitino told police he had sex in a restaurant 6 years ago with a woman. She's now accused of trying to extort millions of dollars from him. Pitino alleges 2 weeks after the 2 engaged in sexual relations, the woman told Pitino she was pregnant and he gave her $3,000 for an abortion. The woman claims Pitino raped her. The Louisville coach says it was consensual sex.
Fire consumed a porch at a south Toledo home this afternoon and also caused smoke damage to the rest of the house at Beverly Drive near the Anthony Wayne Trail. Firefighters say the homeowner was not home at the time of the fire. A cause remains under investigation.
A Michigan man faces disorderly conduct charges after he used his 7 year old son to try and pick up women at a park. Police say the man instructed his son to ask women "If they would like to meet his dad so he could have a mother." When the women would refuse, the boy would get upset and cry. His scheme led to confrontation between other men in the park, so police arrested him.
This one will have police in Janesville, Wisconsin laughing for a while. They say a would-be robber walked into a downtown bar at the wrong time. That's because the bar was full of off-duty cops. The police officers walk in followed by a man wearing a mask. Police say he also had his hand in his waistband pretending to have a gun. It didn't take long for the cops to take him down. The suspect says he didn't intend on robbing the bar. He was only wearing the mask so no one would recognize him.
The dairy company responsible for a fish-killing manure spill last month has had another spill. This time, it was at a Chesterfield dairy facility in southern Lenawee County. The previous spill was in Fulton County, Ohio. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality says heavy rain caused a discharge into a stream last night. Crews cleaned up what they could. The DEQ is waiting for lab results and has not issued a formal health advisory.
The newest Supreme Court justice was recognized at the White House this morning. President Obama and wife Michelle hosted a reception for Justice Sonia Sotomayor. She was the president's first Supreme Court nominee. Sotomayor is the first Hispanic to serve on the nation's highest court. She was sworn-in over the weekend.
Today, President Obama awarded the presidential Medal of Freedom to 16 people. The recipients cover a broad spectrum including actors, activists and athletes. Among those on the list were Senator Edward Kennedy and former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The medal is the nation's highest civilian honor. It was first established by President Harry Truman in 1945 to recognize civilian efforts in World War II.
Night owls and astronomers around the country were treated to quite the light show overnight. The perseid meteor shower was visible, with streaks of light shooting through the sky. This meteor shower happens every summer when the earth's orbit crosses the path of debris from the comet swift-tuttle. The perseid is usually considered to be among the best meteor showers for viewing because of the potential for so many streaks of light through space.
In California, police have arrested a man they believed gunned down 2 people at a toll bridge. California Highway Patrol says they came across Nathaniel Burris, 46, sleeping in an airport shuttle van. Burris drove off as soon as officers approached. A brief chase ensued, but the alleged gunman surrendered. Police believe Burris is the one who opened fire with a shotgun yesterday killing a toll booth collector and someone in a truck nearby.
Brazilian police say the host of a TV crime show is under investigation for possibly ordering killings to boost his show's popularity. Walter Souza is being investigated in connection with as many as 4 killings. Prosecutors say he also faces separate charges of drug trafficking and involvement with a gang.
Passengers riding a British rollercoaster suffered broken bones, back injuries and whiplash after 2 of its cars crashed. A specialist rope rescue team had to be brought in to rescue 32 people who were stranded. Two of the rollercoaster riders had to be cut out of their seats by firefighters. Investigators are trying to figure out why the 2 cars crashed.
The fate of 3 American hikers taken into custody in Iran after straying over the Iraq Iran border remains unclear. Reports out of Iran say the 3 are suspected of being western journalists, not hikers. For now, the State Department says their release seems unlikely since they've been moved to Tehran.
