Overnight house fire, 2010 city budget, Lucas County Dog Warden...

An overnight fire sent a man and his niece running from their home on Jervis near Broadway. The homeowner told fire crews he heard a popping noise that sounded like a bottle breaking. He went outside and found the entire front portion of his house on fire. Fire crews were able to contain the blaze to the front portion of the home.

By tomorrow morning, Toledo's 2010 budget will be available to the public. The deficit is expected to be around $25 million, maybe more. There are two new budget expenses in next year's budget. They include new fire and police classes, which is something Toledo hasn't seen for several years.

Frustrated with the practices of the Lucas County Dog Warden, a prominent Sylvania veterinarian says he would support a dog license boycott if serious changes aren't made soon. Dog-license fees are the prime source of revenue for the dog warden. And Doctor Bob Esplin told the Toledo Blade that if things don't change, Lucas County residents could withhold purchasing dog licenses. Not all the dog warden's critics are on board, though, because some feel it could result in more dogs being killed at the pound if they're picked up without a license.

They thought they stole thousands of dollars in jewelry, but it turns out the jewelry was fake. The criminals broke into Henry's Jewelers on Dorr Street. Once inside, they took what they thought was expensive jewelry, but it was actually the display rings, which are made out of brass. Unfortunately, they did drive through the front window, and that will cost the owner quite a bit to repair.

General Motors says it will close more than one-third of its Saab dealerships. Termination letters have been sent to 81 of the 218 U.S. Saab dealers. Their dealerships will close at the end of the month. The remaining 137 dealers will continue to operate under a newly formed company called Saab Cars North America.

Today, the Lucas County Health Department is hosting a drive-thru H1N1 clinic at the University of Toledo Health Science campus. It's from 11 to 3 in the Dana Center parking lot.

Police in Monroe County are searching for a man in an attempted murder case. Deputies say an African American man approached a car at the intersection of Cole and Vivian Road, opened the passenger door and demanded money. After a brief struggle, the suspect fired two shots at the victim, but did not hit him. The suspect ran off, but is wanted for armed robbery and attempted murder. If you have any information, contact the Monroe County sheriff's office.

The FBI is using special equipment to search for more bodies at the Cleveland home of Anthony Sowell. Agents are using equipment that allows them to look underground for other bodies. So far, 11 bodies have been found on Sowell's property. But agents are also inspecting the ground next door. He's charged with 5 counts of aggravated murder and sits in jail on a $6-million bond.

Later today, people will give a little to save a lot at Levis Commons. "Give a Little, Get a Lot" is an exclusive after hours shopping event to raise money for local charities. You pay $10 for your ticket, and then get to take advantage of sales at Town Center retailers. All the proceeds from the ticket sales go toward charities like Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Seven employees at the Hancock County sheriff's office will be laid off beginning December 13. According to the Findlay Courier, patrol contracts with Arlington and Van Buren will also be halted next month. The cuts come as a result of the Hancock County commissioners mandating all county departments to trim 10 percent from their budgets next year.

Today officially begins deer season in Michigan. So officials are reminding drivers and hunters to play it safe. Michigan's Department of Transportation says deer are on the run this time of year, which increases the possibility of a deer-related crash. MDOT is also reminding hunters to pull their vehicles off the roadway as far as possible when parking to hunt. Firearm deer season lasts until the end of November.
