Often, forces beyond our control affect how much money we can save when pursuing coupon deals. Cashiers bring a large amount of variability to using coupons for two reasons: knowledge and attitude. Corporate coupon policies are complicated. Add to this the fact that policies change from week to week and you begin to get the picture of how easy it is for one cashier to have one perception of allowable coupons that are completely different from the cashier in the next lane.
A cashier's attitude can have a very big impact on your check-out process. Maybe, the shopper in front of you was an irresponsible couponer and just tried to pull off a shady deal.. If you come along with a mitt full of coupons now, the cashier is going to be wary. Perhaps the clerk has a negative attitude and in response sends through everything you hand them even if it isn't allowed.
How do you handle the cashier factor?
1) Be a responsible couponer. Don't try to get away with deals that you know aren't allowed.2) Find the sharpest, friendliest cashiers and go to them as often as possible, even if you have to wait in line.
3) If you can find it, take a copy of the stores coupon policy with you. (These policies can be hard to track down.) If the cashier won't allow a coupon that is clearly allowed, show them the policy.
4) If you think you are right, politely argue your case. Don't be afraid to get the managers input if need be.
If you have a cashier that is frustrated with your coupons remember, be nice and smile. It could increase your savings.
