Missing Doctor's Body Found in Toledo

October 16, 2005 -- The body of the missing Ann Arbor doctor has been found. Police recovered the body of doctor Shankar Palaniappan pan this morning near the boating dock behind Gumbo's restaurant.

Authorities say the body of a Michigan doctor was discovered floating in the Maumee River during a regatta yesterday.

Shankar Palaniappan came to Toledo last Saturday night to meet some old college friends. Police say the young doctor and his friends arrived at Gumbo's/Sin Nightclub at the docks around 9 p.m. But at the end of the night, friends went in search of Palaniappan and they couldn't find him.

Authorities say 26-year-old Doctor Shankar Palaniappan disappeared outside of Gumbo's Bayou Grille restaurant in Toledo last Sunday. He is a first-year resident at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Police say surveillance video from Gumbo's shows Palaniappan leaving the club around 1 a.m.

The coroner's office is trying to determine how the doctor died. Authorities say the Ann Arbor, Michigan man's body was found floating under a dock area behind the restaurant at the start of the crew races yesterday morning.
