Gov. Taft signs UT-MUO merger bill

Two Toledo institutions become "one academic powerhouse."

Marking the end of a whirlwind of legislative activity, Ohio Gov. Bob Taft signed into law the legislation merging on July 1 The University of Toledo and the Medical University of Ohio at a special ceremony this morning.

"On Friday we will bring together two Toledo universities that have been separated for 40 years and create one academic powerhouse," said UT President Dr. Dan Johnson. "With the Governor's signature, we will have merged in statute  now we must do the same in fact as we move toward greatness."

"This is not the end, but the beginning of the creation of a new future for The University of Toledo and northwest Ohio," said MUO President Dr. Lloyd Jacobs.

Both Jacobs and Johnson thanked elected officials in Toledo and in Ohio for their support  no vote was cast against the merger during the General Assembly's legislative process.
