Dog attack - UPDATE

Wednesday, November 07, 2007

A vicious dog attack, now only plastic surgery can help a little boy. That 6-year-old is feeling much better and the dog was surrendered to the dog warden. Today, Rashad Mathis smile for the very first time. He is still badly wounded, but he feels better. He says he is glad the dog that attacked him won't be in his neighborhood anymore. The Rottweiler that attacked him still haunts his dreams.

The Rottweiler doesn't look like a vicious dog, but the first grader saw another side when the dog mauled him at a park near his home on Sunday. Today the owners surrendered the dog to the Lucas County dog warden.

Lucas County dog warden Tom Skeldon says, "They understand that was something they should do and needed to do. The dog will be held here for the ten-day quarantine period. The dog will never bother anyone again."

Tom Skeldon says he explained to the owners that keeping the dog could bite them back in the end.

"If your dog bites a child, given similar circumstances, the dog is likely to bite in the future."

Today, Rashad went to see his doctor and turns out, he is healing really well. But it is the inner scars that worry his mother. When a 13abc reporter asked him if he is anxious to go back outside, Rashad shakes his head no. Rashad mother knows one day her son will go back outside and the dog won't be a threat to her son anymore. But until that day, Rashad can rest easy.

Tom Skeldon has offered to help the owners find a new dog, free of charge. He says they were two elderly people who needed a dog for security reasons in a tough neighborhood. At this point, no charges have been filed.
