EPA loan could be used to fund demoltion and asbestos removal

Toledo mayor Carty Finkbeiner says the city is one step closer to gaining control of Southwyck Mall. He announced the city's demolition plans this afternoon.

The mayor says the owners of both Southwyck and Dillard's are on board. He's hopeful Southwyck will be gone by the end of the year. In a letter sent to the mayor, the owners of Southwyck and the Dillard's department store say they are on board with the city's plans to demolish the property.

The city will use a $1.5 million federal EPA loan to remove asbestos and demolish the mall. The city can only utilize the loan funds if the mall is demolished before the end of the year.

The next step is approval from city council. Mayor Finkbeiner says, "I have every reason to believe between that time and December 31 that we will see the property razed and the asbestos removed." Council will vote on the loan next Tuesday.

Developer Larry Dillin was at today's news conference. He says he still plans to redevelop the property. He wouldn't give a concrete date, but he says it's likely the construction will be complete by 2010.
