The University of Toledo is being sued. Yesterday a former high ranking university employee filed a lawsuit against the university, claiming the university violated her constitutional rights when they fired her earlier this year.
Crystal Dixon calls her public firing humiliating and now she wants the university to pay for it. She wrote an editorial in the Toledo Free Press, she lost her job at the UT and now she's suing.
Crystal Dixon says, "It's humiliating enough for anyone to go through a layoff or firing, but to be publicly fired the way the University of Toledo handled my case; I can't explain how embarrassing and humiliating it has been."
Dixon worked as the associate vice president of human resources at the university. Back in April, Dixon wrote an editorial in the Toledo Free Press.
The president of the university fired Dixon, saying her views aren't consistent with the university stated values. But Dixon says her views didn't affect her doing her job.
"In my 25 plus years as a practicing human resources professional, not only did I recommend the hire, I homosexuals and heterosexuals based upon their credentials and experience."
Now with the backing of the Thomas More Law Center, Dixon says she wants compensation and her job back and the university prohibited from violating another person's constitutional rights.
The university sent us a statement. In part it reads:
"We have asserted from the beginning that Ms. Dixon was in a position of special sensitivity as associate vice president for human resources and this issue is not about freedom of speech, but about her ability to perform that job given her statements in the Toledo Free Press. We are convinced of the correctness of our position and will bring the facts to our defense in a court of law. "
