T. Boone Pickens was in Toledo today. He is expanding his plan to end the countries dependence on foreign oil. The 80-year-old Texas tycoon made the announcement at the Owens Corning headquarters this afternoon.
The topic was energy efficiency and ending America's addiction to foreign oil. Pickens says he has the right plan, and today he received support. The oil and gas developer and Owens Corning are teaming up to make the country more energy efficient through Pickens energy plan. Pickens says getting national attention wasn't cheap.
The Pickens Plan is simple. It calls for the country to invest money in wind power, which creates natural gas to eliminate foreign oil dependence. Natural gas is the country's second largest energy resource, 98 percent of it is used in the U.S. is from North America, but 70 percent of our oil is purchased from foreign nations. Pickens says we have to find better ways of fueling our cars and heating our homes.
Owens Corning CEO Michael Thaman says, "We met a guy who was willing to bet $50 million of his own money to go start telling the story of energy policy and we said 'how would you not want to partner with this guy'."
Today Pickens expanded his plan to include energy efficiency in homes and buildings, embracing what Owen Corning does every day. The fortune 500 company's insulating systems already addresses the need for energy efficiency. Today the company signed on the dotted line as supporters of the energy plan. They believe it's a good way to go green, reduce imports and create jobs. T. Boone Pickens believes president-elect Barack Obama will lead the country down the right path towards energy efficiency.
