KANNAPOLIS, NC -- Kannapolis police say they charged a man with using Craigslist to hire a man to rape his wife.
The attack happened while the couple's two children were home, but police say they were not aware of the attack and were not injured.
Police say the wife called 911 Sunday and said a man with a knife raped her in the bedroom of their home. The husband allegedly watched the crime.
Police say they do not know the motive, but they became suspicious when there were no signs of a break-in at the house.
NC Attorney General Roy Cooper released the following statement Thursday regarding the case:
"This shocking crime is another example of why we're pushing websites that connect people to do a better job of protecting their customers," Cooper said. "The Internet has been a great benefit to all of us, but unfortunately criminals also use the Internet to commit their crimes and websites like MySpace, Facebook and Craigslist have a responsibility to make their sites safer."
The 25-year-old husband faces charges including first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sexual offense and one count of attempted first-degree sexual offense. He is being held under $200,000 bond.
His identity is being withheld in order to protect the identity of his wife, who is the victim of a sexual offense.
