Two of the most outspoken members of Toledo City Council make big announcements about their future. One says he's not running for re-election. The other says he's going for the top job on the 22nd floor.
Toledo City Councilman Frank Szollosi says he will not be running for re-election in November. The democrat says, "It has been a good run these last seven years, but I think I need to take a step back, at least for this cycle, to re-tool."
Szollosi says he wants to focus on his young family. He and his wife are expecting their fourth child around Thanksgiving. Szollosi's second term expires in January of next year. But, he says there is a "strong possibility" he'll run again down the line.
Meanwhile, independent city councilman D. Michael Collins says he will formally announce he's running for mayor this morning inside One Government Center at a 10:00 press conference.
The district two councilman says "While I realize I'm late in the game and need 750 signatures, I'm committed, if given the opportunity by voters to continue to serve the city of Toledo."
As for legislative experience, Collins has been the district two councilman for about two years. He's a retired Toledo police officer and former president of the Toledo Police Patrolman's Association.
Collins becomes the second major independent candidate to join the race for mayor. The other is former Toledo Fire Chief and State Fire Marshall Mike Bell. The other players, widely considered to "major" candidates include Democrats Ben Konop and Keith Wwilkowski, and Republican Jim Moody. Collins has until July 17th to file candidacy petitions with the Lucas County Board of Elections.
