The Wood County sheriff's office is investigating a fatal one car accident that happened around 10:00 last night in the 3700 block of Douglas Road in Bradner. Police say the driver, Lana Rose, didn't see a pond and drove right into it. Police say Rose and the front seat passenger Dale Rose Jr. were able to escape the car. However, a person in the back seat, identified as Larry Sabo of Portage, Ohio, was unable to get out. Rescue crews performed CPR on Sabo but they were unable to revive him.
A fire destroyed a woman's home overnight. It happened after 1:00 a.m. on the 4800 block of Woodland Lane in Sylvania. Crews say the fire detectors woke up the woman. Firefighters believe the fire started in the kitchen and went up through the walls. No word on a cause. No injuries were reported.
The Supreme Court begins a new term today and all eyes will be on our nation's newest justice Judge Sonia Sotomayor. One thing court watchers will be looking for is whether her personality affects the court. Judge Sotomayor was sworn in last month.
Toledo mayoral candidate Mike Bell is making the first stop in his citywide tour of fire stations today. He'll stop by Station 23 on Laskey Road at 4:00 p.m. The event is the first of several Fire House Chats happening this month. Bell says the goal of the events is to talk with citizens throughout the city and get feedback about what they want from government.
In California, as many as 6,000 people were ordered to evacuate their homes due to a growing wildfire 75 miles east of Los Angeles. The flames have scorched more than 3,500 acres in the San Bernardino Mountains and the wind is not helping. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency for the county, freeing up state resources to battle the fire.
The Taliban is claiming responsibility for a deadly attack on U.S. soldiers this weekend. Hundreds of insurgents armed with automatic rifles and rockets stormed a pair of U.S. outposts Saturday. Eight Americans were killed in the attack in the deadliest single military battle since July of last year. It comes as the president tries to decide whether to commit more troops to Afghanistan.
Flooding has been a problem in recent years for the city of Findlay. Today the University of Toledo Lake Erie Center will unveil a rain garden that can store floodwater and prevent storm sewers from over-flowing, all while improving water quality. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur will be there for the unveiling that happens at 3:30 p.m. at the Lake Erie Center on Bayshore Road in Oregon.
It's a project to bring awareness to domestic violence. Tonight the 2009 collection of the Northwest Ohio chapter of the Silent Witness Project will be unveiled. The project consists of life-sized wooden silhouettes representing girls or women who have been the victims of domestic violence. The unveiling is happening at 6:30 tonight at Dayspring Assembly of God Church on North Dixie Highway in Bowling Green.
The proportion of children with autism disorders appears higher than previously estimated. Two new government studies indicate about 1 in 100 children are affected, compared to a previous U.S. estimate of 1 in 150. Federal officials say greater awareness, broader definitions and spotting autism in younger children may explain some of the increase.
The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating a fatal boating accident off Long Island, New York. Officials say seven people were aboard a 40-foot boat last night when it went aground. Three people are confirmed dead and four others were seriously injured. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
A Florida woman is in the hospital after being attacked by a family of five raccoons. The 74-year-old saw the animals in her yard late Saturday afternoon. She went out to shoo them away and they attacked her legs. When she fell, they bit and scratched her all over her body. A neighbor heard her cries and helped scare the animals away. The woman is being treated for rabies as a precaution.
