The MLK Kitchen for the Poor is down on its luck and needs your help!
A local organization that helps feed the hungry needs help themselves. Tonight, the MLK Kitchen for the Poor is making a plea to the community.
The kitchen for the poor feeds anywhere between 200 and 300 people a day. The kitchen is open Monday through Friday to those who need a hot meal, but now the kitchen is down on its luck and needs your help.
For 40 years this kitchen has been open to those in need. Juanita Person, who runs the kitchen, says, "We just fed 222 people here today." Person's brother, Raymond Savage, picks up donated food and delivers meals. "Raymond delivers meals to out sick and shut in, and we try and stay in the vicinity because of gas prices, but we deliver outside of that also," says Person.
But picks up and deliveries have stalled, and his 1979 Dodge pick-up truck has been anything but an adventure. "It clunked out. It was a donation. It was a '79 and Raymond drove it as long as he could to do the pick ups and it clunked out on him Friday evening," says Person. Raymond Savage says, "I took it in to the dealership and they told me it wasn't worth repairing, so."
Now leaders at the kitchen have to find a way to make deliveries and pick up thousands of pounds of food from food banks and stores in Archbold, Wauseon, and Swanton. So they're making a plea to the community. The kitchen isn't asking for a souped up SUV. They prefer a cargo van with few seats so they can cart as much food as they can. "If someone would come down at 12 noon and see what we do, they would see what the vehicle would be doing," says Person.
Let no man go hungry is the motto here. The hope is that someone will step up and donate a vehicle, get meals back on wheels and into the hands of the needy.
