Blue pumpkin sale benefits child abuse victims

One tween is making a difference with her seasonal sales and year-long events

After hearing about the awful impact of child abuse, a local girl decided she could help child abuse victims.

At Jacob's Garden Store in Ottawa Lake, Michigan, blue pumpkins are a big hit. Abbey Pawlak, 12, creates them and then sells them to raise money to help child abuse victims. She says, "The pumpkin's blue to represent the bruises on a child's body."

Young Abbey came up with the idea last year after deciding she wanted to help area children. In her first season of selling, Abbey raised enough to donate $1,418.

This year, Abbey expanded the blue pumpkin idea with candles, t-shirts and of course, more pumpkins than last year, thanks to Gust Brothers pumpkin farm. The farmers donated pumpkins to Abbey's cause.

In August there was a volleyball game --Northview versus Cardinal Stritch--that raised like around $1,700.

The money Abbey raised last year went toward buying an examination table for the Family and Child Abuse Prevention Center. Abbey hopes to sell even more blue pumpkins next year because she believes one person can make a difference.
