This year, road salt supplies shouldn't be an issue.

Even though it's still fall, the winter weather is right around the corner. The Ohio Department of Transportation is gearing up for the season. This year, road salt supplies shouldn't be an issue.

Anticipation is mounting as ODOT crews give the final checkups to the winter fleet. "Believe it or not, a lot of these plow drivers look forward to getting out there on the road," says Theresa Pollick.

Oil changes, rust removal, and a quick engine check wrap up the inspection. But you also need salt to battle snow and ice. Statewide, ODOT has around 600,000 tons, and can easily get more, a far cry from last year when some communities ran out of road salt.

This year there is plenty of salt in Wood County - 3500 tons. They are joining together with other communities and ODOT. Perrysburg, Rossford, Owens Community College, Walbridge, Northwood, and Maumee are all part of the joint contract. Everyone has guidelines for when and where they plan on salting.
