Shooting at Big Shots bar, suspect killed

Monday, November 09, 2009

The suspect, Alvin Tate, died this morning from gunshot wounds after turning his own gun on Toledo police officers.

There is an update to the latest bar shooting. The suspect, Alvin Tate, died this morning from gunshot wounds after turning his own gun on Toledo police officers. This is the second bar shooting in a month.

Just one month ago shots rang out inside and outside Route 66 bar, sparking people around the country to get the impression of extreme violence in Toledo and pushing Mayor Finkbeiner to shut it down.

Then early Saturday morning another shoot out at Hot Shots bar in the central city. A scene Police Chief Mike Navarre describes as chaotic. It ended in police shooting suspect Alvin Tate, who died this morning. The mayor says violence is nothing new when you mix late nights with alcohol. He wants owners to take responsibility for what is happening on their property after hours.

Chief Navarre is pulling all of the crime reports and 911 calls involving Hot Shots in the past year to see just how many complaints the bar has.

City leaders want to shut down Hot Shots but the mayor also acknowledges closing a bar isn't going to make the problem go away.

"Big problem is the easy and availability of weapons in the hands of those who are mixing it with alcohol and drugs and that doesn't work."

But it might work in favor of Route 66. The mayor says what happened a month ago was a night that got out of hand but he's not dead set on keeping the bar with the shootout seen around the country closed.

"Anybody who is interested in working with us we're not in the business of closing down honorable businesses in the city of Toledo."

The mayor and police chief will be meeting with both the owners of Route 66 and Hot Shots to discuss the recent violence. Mayor Finkbeiner says this weekend's shooting could be the final straw for the central city bar.
