Senior members can leave with one-time sum

Bowling Green State University is looking into an incentive program to reduce its staff. Trustees will decide on the "University Employee Separation Program" at their meeting on December 3.

The university tells us the one-time offer would apply to certain full-time faculty and staff who've worked at BGSU at least 15 years. It would allow them to get a flat dollar amount if they retire or leave the university voluntarily.

Faculty and staff members received this letter:

Dear Faculty and Staff:

I am writing to tell you about a new program that we hope to implement. At the December meeting, we will ask the Board of Trustees to approve a University Employee Separation Program (UESP).

This separation benefit will be a one-time offer to full-time faculty and staff with at least 15 years of service to BGSU as of June 30, 2010. Eligible employees will receive a flat dollar amount if they choose to retire or leave the University. I want to stress that this is a voluntary program.

It is also important to understand that this UESP is not an early retirement incentive plan because it will also be available to employees who are not retiring. In addition, no retirement service credit will be purchased for any employee.

It is also important to note that faculty and staff who take advantage of the benefit may only return to work at BGSU as an adjunct faculty member for one year and only under certain conditions. There will be no other opportunity to be "rehired" at the University for ten years.

Employees who are not eligible for the program include those whose positions are 100% funded by federal grants, part-time employees and people who have retired and been re-hired, to name a few. Details of the program, including the payout amounts, are still being finalized and will be announced when the program is accepted by the Board of Trustees.

Comprehensive information about the program will be sent to eligible employees following board approval.

The UESP is an important tool to help reduce costs in these uncertain economic times. I appreciate your hard work and dedication to the University and will keep you informed as we move forward.

Regards,
Carol Cartwright
