Major turnout for TPS H1N1 clinic

More people showed up for today's clinic than all clinics from last weekend and yesterday's combined

Another H1N1 vaccine clinic for Toledo Public Schools was held today. This time, so many people showed up at Bowsher High School, that health officials had to make a run for more vaccines. More people showed up for today's clinic than all clinics from last weekend and yesterday's combined.

"This is great. This is excellent. People are responding," said Kevin Haligan with the Lucas County Health Department.

Originally the clinic's were open to TPS students only, but today that group was expanded to include anyone with chronic conditions under age 65.

The Health Department had 900 shots and mist vaccines on hand, and had to go on a run for more when they ran out.

Because there is a shortage of the shot vaccine, those without chronic conditions have to get the flu mist, which carries a small amount of the live H1N1 virus. Some people haven't been comfortable with that.

"It hasn't been out that long for me to feel comfortable getting a live virus and to be comfortable going home and not worrying about getting [my children] ill from that virus," said Nick Williams, a father of three.

Nevertheless, health officials say those with healthy immune systems should not experience complications with the mist.

Next Saturday, Springfield students will have a chance to get their free vaccine at Springfield High School. On Sunday, a clinic is being set up at Southview Sylvania. As of right now, those clinics are for students only.
